A Tribute to Dr. Gerald M. De Wester December 17, 1929 - January 30, 2009 “To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty, to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you lived. This is to have succeeded.” - Ralph Waldo Emerson - On January 30, 2009 at the age of 79, Dr. Gerald De Wester passed-away. He is warmly remembered as a man of great dignity and compassion. To many, he was the consummate medical professional whose calm demeanor served to strengthen patients in times of great difficulty. To family members, he will always be a loving patriarch, husband, father, brother, grandfather and great grandfather. To Our Patients and the Medical Community:Can you ever really honor a father that has been your mentor, friend and role model? As a child my father would take me to the hospital for rounds. He taught me that the hospital was a place where people got well, not a place to be sick or die. His love of being a doctor created the same passion within me. Without his guidance and support I would never have pursued my life’s work. For everything he has done I am immensely thankful. For me, the only fitting way to express my admiration was to name our practice after him. So we are now called the Gerald M. De Wester Treatment and Research Center. My father is best known to his patients and the Indianapolis medical community as a true patient advocate. Whether battling hospital and insurance company administrators or teaching physicians in training, my father emphasized to me with his words and actions that it is the interests of our patients that must be our paramount concern. These are ideals to which we will remain true. We will always conduct ourselves with the professionalism, compassion, and scientific curiosity my father maintained everyday of his career. Over the past few years our practice has become focused on treating sex hormone deficiencies and the vast number of conditions complicated by these deficiencies. Both my father and I have seen people’s lives made better by achieving sex hormone stability. As this area of medicine progresses we will always be on the leading edge of bringing good science and medical care to our patients. Sincerely Dr. Jeffrey De Wester The Gerald M.
